Surgin' General

November 29, 2005, I wrote this (you could look it up), as a proposed speech (short and sweet) for our President to make, given what we were confronting at the time in Iraq.

I don't think our troops ought to be used for carrying out an ill-conceived plan, based not just on faulty intelligence but contrary to that intelligence in many cases, and from sources the US intelligence community (and others) regarded as fundamentally flawed, with no particularly clear idea of what will constitute success, and generating more problems than are solved. As my Daddy might say, the first thing you do when you find yourself in a hole is to stop digging.

But now our President has drafted a new plan, and defended it in what is now, yet again, the most important speech of his Presidency.

So I watched his speech, listened carefully to his arguments, watched FOX, MSNBC, and CNN for punditry, and read various reactions today in the newspapers, blogs, etc..

It took a lot of time for me to consider and evaluate all this new information, in order to compose my own response, based upon the new strategy, leadership, and direction so articulately defended by our President last night. Here it is.

I gave him about a minute. I had turned on the TV at about five minutes to nine and saw that PBS (no cable TV) was about to air a program about China. I was interested in watching it but then a message came up at the bottom of the screen informing me that it would be pushed back an hour so Bush could be seen talking.
I'm wondering about something. If the administration hadn't been priming the public about this speech for so many weeks, how do you think it'd would've been recieved? Imagine all you knew was that Bush was planning a new strategy. The elections were an obvious example of the country's opinion (at least I thought it was). And then how would the public have reacted when he said he was gonna INCREASE troop levels?
I think the priming, letting people know what his intentions were a few weeks ahead of this speech he planned o' so long for, saved the white house having to defend against a raid of people with torches and pitchforks.
Do you think a born again, with their tattered ego (they did after all require a second birth) could ever admit to having been wrong about something so colossal? I know he gave a concession "Ooopsie" by saying he messed up by not sending enough troops earlier, but I think he's gonna go to his deathbed thinking invading Iraq was a smart move. Sorta takes the wind out of my sails. How can you get through to someone so delusional?
