I'll be the first to admit that Detroit said "here, take it" but there was skill and determination involved in saying "Okay. Thanks." Start the series tomorrow and I still say Tigers in five or six.
Verlander's second error vs. that play at first by Weaver with Pujols throwing from his back to get Polanco sums up this series. The Cards had a lot of injuries throughout the year, and even Leyland said that is "not [a mere] 83 win team" out there. Everyone got healthy at just the right time, and the pitching rotation we thought we had at the beginning of the year finally showed up as well. I also think that Isringhausen's injury was "pre-ordained" in a destiny sort of way. The old guys (Izzy, Edmonds, Rolen, etc...) now have their ring and maybe ought to think about retirement. The Cards seem to have a sufficient amoung of youngbloods to move on.
Weaver is the comeback pitching story of the year. And Wainwright has ice in his veins. No way he doesn't get a chance to start next year. Hats off again to La Russa and the pitchers, who did a terrific job solving the problem of the Tigers hitters, and made some very good players look very, very bad.
And to the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals, who've got more heart and sheer nerve than I had imagined.
